Can We Talk About Diamond’s Reaction To Carlton’s Sexuality On ‘Love Is Blind’?

Even though homophobia is certainly nothing new, it’s still a hard pill to swallow. If you’ve been keeping up with Netflix’s Love Is Blind, then you know exactly where this is going. And if you don’t watch the show, then here’s some insight into what it’s about.

[Spoiler Alert! This article covers Carlton and Diamond’s relationship throughout the first season of Love Is Blind including the reunion episode.]

The Experiment

Love Is Blind is a reality show featuring an experiment that started off with a group of men in one house and a group of women in another. They spent ten days going on dates with each other, with the intention of finding someone they want to spend the rest of their lives with. Of course, there’s a twist.

Each date took place in a secluded pod that prevented them from seeing each other, taking the concept of a blind date to a whole new level. The cast made connections solely based on personality and even proposing without knowing what the other person looks like.

Those who got engaged got to meet face-to-face and were whisked off to Mexico. There they got to know each other on a physical level and spend a few days together before being thrown back into the real world.

Those who made it out of Mexico moved in together and started planning their weddings which were just weeks away. Unfortunately, Carlton Morton, 34, and his fiance Diamond Jack, 28, didn’t make it past the honeymoon stage.

Carlton’s Confession

Carlton and Diamond connected in the pod and went on to build a connection in Mexico. However, their happiness didn’t last. Throughout the experiment, Carlton had been keeping something from Diamond, and for good reason.

The whole point of the experiment is to fall for someone based on their character, and Carlton felt that his past relationships with men would prevent women from giving him a chance. So, he chose to wait until meeting Diamond in person before revealing this to her, and it went about as well as he expected it would.

Watching Diamond’s reaction to Carlton’s confession about his sexuality was cringeworthy at best. He told her he was a fluid male, meaning he is attracted to people for who they are rather than what’s between their legs. Diamond seemed taken aback by this and left Carlton in tears while she took time to process everything.

Diamond’s Reaction

When the two met up the next day, Diamond tells the cameras she wants to work things out, but needs to talk to Carlton. After the two sit down, however, and awkwardly hug, it’s clear that feelings have changed.

Things are civil at first, as Diamond explains that she felt he wasn’t honest about who he really is. Carlton then rationalizes his decision to withhold this information as he didn’t want her to pre-judge him. Considering the stigma around bisexual men, this makes perfect sense.

The conversation starts to go downhill when Diamond begins questioning Carlton’s sexuality, asking him if he’s sure he wants to be with a female. Because a man can’t be bisexual, right? He’s either, gay, straight, or lying. Cringe.

Viewers can see that Carlton is offended, and things quickly become explosive when he gets defensive. Drinks are tossed, obscenities are thrown around, Beyonce is quoted, a diamond ring ends up in the pool, and the two leave Mexico solo.

Even though Diamond’s reaction was nauseating, Carlton has been getting a ton of hate since the series has aired.

The Public’s Response

The argument between Carlton and Diamond brought up a number of controversial issues among fans, including the subject of living “on the down-low” as well as stereotypes about bisexuality.

It’s often believed that someone who is bisexual can never be satisfied with one partner (of either gender), and are more likely to cheat. Bisexual men are also more likely to be considered “confused” or on their way to discovering that they’re gay. Neither of these assumptions is true of course.

Unfortunately, it seems that a large majority of people might not agree, and Carlton isn’t getting the support that he deserves. Coming out as a bisexual man is difficult enough, but to come out to the world on Netflix when some of your closest family and friends don’t even know the details of your sexuality is difficult, to say the least. Then being a black man and the son of a preacher on top of all that, it adds more complexities to the situation.

“It’s honestly been tough because it’s something that I was not prepared for,” Carlton said in an interview with CNN. “People say all the time, ‘Well you should’ve known people would react this way,’ but it’s different when you’re receiving death threats.”

The threats are likely being triggered by him calling Diamond a bitch, overshadowing her biphobic response to his coming out. Things have been so rough for the reality star that he recently posted a rather dark message on Instagram stating that he’s taking a break from the press.

The post was captioned with, “Thanks for the 3 of y’all who supported me in this. I feel alone and don’t want any of this life anymore. I’m fighting ALONE. And it HURTS.”

Both Parties Have Regrets

Neither Carlton nor Diamond is shifting the blame on the other, and have both admitted that they could have handled the situation differently. In terms of regrets, they each expressed them in an interview with People.

Diamond described her side of the story saying, “I was trying to be very understanding, but I had questions because I’ve never been with a bisexual man … Maybe I should have been more encouraging and maybe start off saying, ‘I’m happy you were able to open up to me. I’m happy you’re able to bring this to my attention at this moment in time.’ … That possibly could have changed that whole outcome of how we were aggressive toward each other.”

Carlton also expressed his regrets saying, “I wish that I would have not allowed myself to be so defensive. I thought that I was being rejected and I think I counted myself out before she did.”

The Reunion

The Love is Blind reunion has just aired, giving Carlton and Diamond the opportunity to clear the air and update fans on their relationship. While both found it hard to watch a clip of their big blowout, this story does have a happy ending.

Carlton began by addressing some of the backlash by making it clear that he never thought his fiance was homophobic or biphobic. He also admitted that calling her a bitch was a mistake saying, “That is something that never should have happened. There’s no excuse.”

Diamond revealed that she has also received numerous death threats after their argument and that the fallout has been hard for her as well. Fortunately, she and Carlton were able to bury the hatchet before the show aired.

“Before the show starts, I want to at least be comfortable with him in the same room,” she said. “And I didn’t want any animosity or tension between us.”

When asked if Carlton wished he had come clean about his sexuality sooner, he broke down. “I would have done whatever it takes to be sitting on the couch as happy as these people,” he said pointing to the married couples around him. “I would’ve done whatever it took had I known then that that’s what it took to sit here happily married.”

Where The Couple Left Things

Even though apologies were made and they left on good terms, there doesn’t seem to be hope for a rekindled romance between the two. Diamond made it pretty clear that she didn’t think she could ever move past Carlton’s disrespect.

That didn’t stop him from getting down on one knee though! (Again.) Carlton stated that the only reason he went to the reunion was to let Diamond know that he would always be there for her, even if that meant as just a friend.

“Forgiveness sometimes means let’s create something beautiful through all the darkness, and today I would like for it to be the start of creating something really beautiful,” he said before walking over to her and reassuring her that he wasn’t proposing marriage before getting down on one knee.

“I hope you take this ring again as a significant piece of our friendship and the start of something beautiful without any type of plan or like ‘this is our plan of action.’ Look familiar?”

Turns out, Carlton had jumped in the pool back in Mexico and searched for her engagement ring! And while we won’t likely see them back together any time soon, the conversations that have been started on bisexuality and fluidity have been a gift to the LGBTQ community.
